Vision Statement for
Campus Ministry in Lubbock, Texas
First Draft
July 10, 2003
By 2008, the three LCMS and two ELCA churches in Lubbock, Texas will work in
close partnership with the Texas District in operating and supporting a
strong campus ministry to students at Texas Tech and other area colleges and
universities. This support and partnership from the local congregations
will be demonstrated in significant financial support, intentional
involvement of both pastors and laity in the ministry and significant
programming for student ministry in the individual churches. This campus
ministry will involve more than 400 students in worship, Bible study and/or
service activities. Students will feel and demonstrate a strong sense of
ownership of this ministry and will, therefore, provide significant
leadership for the ministry as they lead Bible studies, prepare many of the
meals and plan events and activities. Faculty at Lubbock area institutions
of higher education will also be involved in this ministry effort.
Effective and frequent communication will take place between the campus
ministry leadership and students, parents, local churches, Texas and New
Mexico Lutheran churches, donors and alumni. One key ingredient in this
communication scheme will be the maintenance of an active, informative web
site. Alumni and churches throughout Texas and New Mexico will be making
significant financial donations to the campus ministry effort. The ministry
programming will involve ministry activities at individual churches and
ministry activities at the Student Center. These activities will maintain a
healthy balance of Bible study, worship, service and social activities.
There will be at least one Bible study for students in a local church, on
campus or at the Student Center every day of the week. This ministry will
be so vibrant and alive that the Texas District will recognize its viability
and importance and will provide financial support and once again, become a
full partner in this ministry. Supporting agencies will provide enough
finances that the ministry can once again employ a full time Campus Ministry
Director. Campus Ministry in Lubbock, Texas will become a model for other
cooperative town/gown campus ministries in Texas and throughout the U.S.
